Some nations have mastered their branding and created an identity that attracts tourists and improves international relations.

Let’s dive in!

Skyscrapers in Japan

Cool Japan: Japan’s Nation Branding

It’s only right to start with Japan, as there’s no denying the impact of the nation’s branding.

Japan’s “Cool Japan” initiative exemplifies how a nation can leverage cultural uniqueness to shape a powerful global identity.

And Japan is an absolute powerhouse of culture.

The nation elevated “Cool Japan” in 2013 to refer to the aspects of the nation’s culture that non-Japanese people find “cool”. It aimed to promote Japan’s “soft power” and highlight the aspects of the culture that made it unique.

Shinzo Abe was prime minister, and he used this new brand strategy to promote all things Japanese.

From the food, to the local products, fashion, robots, animation and high-tech, eco-friendly industrial products, the idea was to highlight the distinct elements of Japanese culture that set it apart from the rest of the world.

The goal of Cool Japan was to showcase the entire culture overseas and trigger economic growth as a result. So, when people saw how “cool” and cultured Japan was, they’d want to book a flight and see it for themselves. The anime culture, in particular, benefited from this reputation and the industry itself boomed.

In 2015, 19.73 million people visited Japan according to 2. In 2013, 10.36 million people visited the country, so the increase was clear. It’s safe to say that the strategy was having an impact.

In 2016, at the Rio Olympics Closing Ceremony Abe surprised the world with a promotional video of Japan, who would be holding the next games.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, it was delayed a year and held in Tokyo in 2021.

During the Tokyo Olympics, Cool Japan took the spotlight. The opening ceremony was nothing short of spectacular, and it brought Japanese culture to life.

Japan used the Olympics to show the world the nation’s culture. They used popular characters as ambassadors during the games, which linked the event to the country.

Manga, anime and video games were rife at the 2021 Olympics, and popular music was used as a constant backdrop. Japan used the games to promote its culture, which also worked well for city branding.

And it worked.

By including these popular characters in the games, Japan also catered to a younger demographic. What happened as a result? A huge surge of attention on social media. Bingo.

This added visibility and attention to the nation’s culture propelled them into the limelight. It was highly evident that their culture was strong, and that their identity as a nation was one worth experiencing.

The Olympic games were a turning point for the country’s global image, and the Cool Japan initiative stood strong.

Korean Wave (Hallyu): South Korea’s Nation Branding

The Korean Wave, also known as Hallyu, refers to a phenomenon in South Korea’s culture, like K-Pop and K-drama. South Korea is one of the only countries in the world that relies on pop culture to form its brand identity and place branding, and it definitely makes a statement.

In 2012, Barack Obama visited South Korea. His mention of the Korean Wave during his visit sparked interest in it, and it was a priority for the government for this to be the case.

The same year, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Korea prepared a fund of 730 billion won or 6.2 million USD to build a new concert venue, hold events, and provide financial support for Hallyu.

In the early 1990s South Korea lifted its travel ban on foreign travel for Koreans, and this had a big impact on Hallyu.

Koreans were able to travel to the Western world.

Many of these people continued their education there or got a job, meaning they were introduced to a new perspective when it came to business and all kinds of culture. When a lot of them returned, they brought back a fresh mindset that helped them shape the country.

When we imagine a “powerful” country, our mind immediately goes to war, danger and violence. Or maybe that’s just me. Either way, a powerful country tends to have a large economic or military force behind it.

“Soft” power is different. This is the kind of power that comes from a country having such a strong identity that it places them in a unique position of strength. This is exactly what the Korean Wave aimed to do. The driving force behind it was to put Korea on top through its culture and interesting image.

In recent years, the Netflix hit Squid Game, K-Pop, and the award-winning film Parasite have all come from South Korea. It’s safe to say that the Korean Wave has had the desired effect.

100% Pure New Zealand: New Zealand’s Nation Branding

When it comes to national branding, New Zealand’s efforts are strong. The country’s aim was to stand apart and stand alone, despite it being a relatively small and remote country.

The 100% Pure New Zealand campaign aimed to portray New Zealand in a positive way, using this opportunity to showcase its clean, pure and untouched landscapes, as well as the sense of adventure it has to offer.

This campaign was introduced in 1999 with a clear mission to tell New Zealand’s story to promote tourism and capture the unique identity of the country.

The country’s rich culture is strong throughout the campaign, with a powerful connection to Māori culture. New Zealand is known for this, and they used it to their advantage in the nation’s campaign. With so many tours and experiences, tourists can immerse themselves in this culture the country is so well-known for.

From Māori cuisine tasting and cooking experiences to performing arts shows, the haka and the opportunity to learn the language, this sets the country apart as it connects New Zealand to its historical culture.

The campaign highlights New Zealand’s natural beauty, stating:

New Zealand knows all the moods of the sea. Whether you’re looking for solitude, adventure or breathtaking views, South Island beaches are nature’s gift to those seeking an unforgettable coastal escape.

The country’s natural beauty is heavily pushed throughout the campaign, from the option of tours visiting glaciers to beach adventures, the spectacular views and sense of adventure are strong.

They also push the fact that the country has fewer sharks than Australia, which gives off a sense of security (as much as possible) and allows people to feel more able to embrace the country’s beautiful scenery.

Any Lord of the Rings fans out there? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that New Zealand is the “Home of Middle-Earth” and, yes, it’s Lord of the Rings galore. Movie set tours and Wētā Workshop experiences are also promoted to tourists, connecting the nation to the successful trilogy.

It’s no secret that the world is becoming more environmentally conscious, and New Zealand’s national branding aims to keep the country relevant with a strong identity of purity and natural landscapes.

G’Day from Down Under: Australia’s Nation Branding

Australia’s branding really encapsulates the essence of the country. Also known as the Land Down Under, Australia’s branding aims to bring the wildlife, the people and the culture to the rest of the world and highlight what the country has to offer.

The “There’s Nothing Like Australia” campaign paints the country in a position of catering to all kinds of people. This portrays the country as a place that offers something to everyone.

Kylie Minogue is associated with Australia as she was born in Melbourne. Due to this, there are a lot of Kylie-based activities and experiences for tourists to try, like a tour of the Neighbours set. There’s also a tourism video with just the right amount of cheese that showcases Australia to the world.

The video is aimed at Brits, encouraging them to come and see their Aussie mates to get a break from reality and soak up the culture. “All of Australia loves you” and the line “we’ll clear your head, have a sausage in bread” are just some of the lines that jump out.

Kylie Minogue is singing directly to the Brits and telling them exactly why they need to go to the land down under. Showing the interesting wildlife, the surfing culture and emphasising the friendliness of the locals, the nation is presented as being highly welcoming. The Australian nation is highlighting its ability to save the Brits from UK politics and inviting them to seek some laid back fun in Australia.

Globally, Australia is known for its exceptional landscapes, dazzling city lights, and unique wildlife.

Well, some say unique, I say terrifying…

The branding behind the country aims to present its progressive nature and warmhearted spirit, as well as the laid-back and enjoyable lifestyle.

A kangaroo is used in the logo, which is very fitting as it’s known for this animal all over the world. Can anyone even say the word kangaroo without the Australian accent? This animal is known for leaping and jumping forward, reflecting Australia’s ability to keep up with the changing times.

The kangaroo’s head in the logo is made from a hooked ‘7’ boomerang, which is another well-known element used ceremonially as a percussive, rhythmic instrument for dance and song.

The colour palette used creates a strong identity that reflects Australia’s natural landscapes. Green and gold have a strong presence throughout, reflecting the lush green forests and the glowing sun and sand. This encapsulates the beauty of the country and alludes to the beautiful landscapes and natural beauty.

Fosters was first brewed in Melbourne in 1888 and has become an integral part of the nation’s image. This has played a large role in promoting Australia’s laidback lifestyle and fun-loving atmosphere.

Marketing campaigns for Fosters over the years have showcased Australian imagery like barbeques, surf beaches, and social gatherings to promote a friendly atmosphere.

Australia’s nation branding works so well because it combines all of the country’s strengths and portrays it in a positive position to the rest of the world.

The relaxed, laidback lifestyle as well as the opportunity for adventure and exploring wildlife makes it seem like an intriguing and welcoming nation.

Again, this highlights the sense of adventure the country provides.
